A Klickitat County Bed & Breakfast in the Wonderful State of Washington
Bed and Breakfast Inn Description
grand old house built in 1860 by Erastus Joslyn on the east end of the Columbia River Gorge. Great place to visit all the natural wonders the Gorge has to offer, from year round skiing, to volcano nation park. Hiking, biking, wind surfing, bird watching, white water rafting, fishing skiing as well as antique hunting in Bingen and near by Hood River, OregonBingen Bed And Breakfast Inns is an interesting term, the City of Bingen, Washington has a population of around 700 which makes it the third largest city in Klickitat County, this tells you a lot about this area. While not remote, only one hour by interstate highway from Portland Oregon, Bingen is an excellent location to access areas off the beaten track. One of the more interesting things about this area is that Bingen is about 30 to 40 miles from three mountains. To the South, across the Columbia River, which is crossed on a near by bridge to Hood River, Oregon, is Mount Hood. Mt Hood is a developed mountain with several world class ski slopes. Mt Hood has snow all year round and offers down hill skiing 11 months of the year. Of course the summer skiing is not on fresh fallen powder, and is really glacier skiing but it is a summer time option. Winters on Mt Hood can bring over 10 feet of snow at easily accessible elevations. Cross Country Skiing and Telemark are definately options on this mountain. Summer on Hood offers camping, hiking, backpacking and biking, generally with ready access to civilization. About 40 miles to the north west is Mt St Helens, a national volcano monument. Since she blew her top Helens is only 8,000 feet tall, and doesnt offer year round snow any more. There are three sides to Helens. From the West side off Interstate I-5 it is possible to drive in to view the crater from the direction it blew. The access from I-5 is open most of the year, although snow may limit how close you can get in winter. From the East side it is possible to drive to a view point and look down into the crater. This route which starts not far from Bingen is not an option once the snow flys. From the south side it is possible to climb the mountain. This is not a technical hike, more like a climb on a rocky sand pile, many people do it while carrying children. It is possible to have a picnic on the rim of the volcano if you dont mind sand in your sandwich. This route is open year round, there are some restrictions, access would be either from Bingen or from I-5. To the north of Bingen is Mt Adams, the least traveled, least commercial of the three peaks. Spring comes late to Mt Adams, wild flowers can be found from June to August depending on elevation. Camping options range from backpacking to car camping.
Bingen is close to several rivers that offer white water rafting and kayaking. Rentals and guides are readily available. Being about 20 feet above the Columbia River gives Bingen a mild climate, snow in Bingen is rare - but in winter snow is only 20 miles away. Wild flowers bloom first at Bingen's elevation and then move up the hills as the season progresses. Hiking is a year round sport in Bingen. Birding, is another elevation controlled sport, with many species hanging around our mild climate, but lots more stopping by on their migrations. For those interested in native american culture, there are several tribal museums within 75 miles of Bingen. Bingen was a cultural center when Louis and Clark passed thru. Not far from Bingen was a native american town/trading center that was built with cedar planks imported from Vancouver Island.
Bingen is at the heart of the worlds best wind surfing, the winds in summer are reliable and blow from the west. The Columbia River flows from the east. These conditions set up for perfect wind surfing. Lessons are available, sitting on the beach and watching is almost as much fun.
