Woodstock, founded in 1762, is a charming town of about 3,000 in the northern Shenandoah Valley. It is the county seat of Shenandoah County, and its limestone courthouse is well-known as the oldest one in continuous use west of the Blue Ridge. Woodstock is also home to the Shenandoah County Fair, which is held the last week of August every year. U.S. Rt. 11 (the Old Valley Pike) is Woodstock's Main Street (as it is for most Valley towns), and it runs north-south through the Valley, parallel to Interstate 81. Woodstock was first settled by Germans traveling from Pennsylvania to find new lands to the south and west.
