Historic Salem, VA was established in 1802. Salem has a qaint downtown area which is home to many small specialty shops and restaurants. Old Salem Days, held each September fills Main Street with antique cars, crafts, antique vendors, and family activities. Bed and breakfasts are fast catching on as an alternative to the local hotels. Bed and breakfasts are filling a need generated by these large events, as traditional lodging usually does not have enough capacity to handle the influx of participants. The campus of Roanoke College hosts many events throughout the year and is also a beautiful place to stroll through. Salem is located centrally in Virginia, in the heart of the Roanoke Valley.
