Harborton, Virginia is a sweet little bayside village located on Pungoteague Creek where commercial fishing boats (mostly crabbers) can be heard leaving the town dock before sunrise. Memories of years past can be experienced at the sole bed and breakfast situated in the heart of town. Two major landowners, Raymond Hutchinson and James Hoffman, sold lots to form the town which was first called Hoffman's Wharf. The current Harborton Road is the boundary that divided the Hoffman and Hutchinson parcels. In 1894, the town's name was changed to Harborton. At that time it was a bustling place with several shops, churches, a school, blacksmith and fertilizer factory. Most of the businesses were located on the wharf. Steamboats docked at Harborton, including a floating theatre. The local bed and breakfast inn is a ship's carpenter house formerly known as the William Read House. Homes of this style, built in the late 1800's, stretch along Harborton Road. At the end of the road, facing the water is the building (now a private residence) that housed Martin & Mason, importers of coal, lumber and building supplies via its own vessels. Smith K. Martin II was the founder of Martin & Mason and his descendants still live in Harborton today. Harborton now attracts artists, nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts who appreciate the simpler way of life and the beauty that abounds. Bird watching, kayaking, sailing, fishing, crabbing, boating are a way of life in Harborton. It a secret adventure waiting to be discovered by tourists.
