The sleepy little town of Goshen, Virginia (pop. 400) was a bustling village in the late 1800's, famous for its spring waters and the iron ore in the area. A large hotel, The Alleghany, overlooked the town and attracted visitors who arrived by train to enjoy the cool summers. Now the only Goshen Bed and Breakfast is the Hummingbird Inn, just at the base of the hill where the Alleghany once stood. The trains still run by this Goshen Bed and Breakfast, which was named for a passenger train called the Hummingbird Limited. Hummingbirds frequent the inn, as do couples in search of a relaxing retreat.
Goshen is the nearest town to Goshen Pass, a spectacular rocky gorge where the Maury River cuts through the mountains. Hiking and picnicing, as well as swimming and fishing, are favorite pastimes in the Pass.
If you're looking for a getaway in the countryside, Goshen is well-situated in Rockbridge County, close enough to Lexington, Staunton, and Warm Springs for visiting, yet far from the crowds and bustle. And the Hummingbird Inn is the Goshen Bed and Breakfast you'll want to visit, with lovely gardens bordering a wide trout stream, ample common areas and porches, and comfortably spacious guest rooms.
