Vanderpool is a small blip on the map with a post office, cemetary and volunteer fire department. Even though Vanderpool is thought to be "remote" by some standards, it is centrally located to many activities. Vanderpool's normal population of 27 is masked by the influx of visitors during the fall season when the Big Tooth Maple trees change color at nearby Lost Maples State Natural Area. Even though the majority of it's visitors are in the fall, hiking at Lost Maples is an enjoyable experience anytime of the year. Spring offers excellent bird watching opportunities and the winter months lend the opportunity to experience solitude and serenity. Vanderpool is also home to Ranch Road 337, which has always been considered one of the best scenic drives in the state. The winding two-lane country road connects Vanderpool to nearby Medina (20 miles) home of the Annual International Apple Festival held the end of July, as well as Leakey and the Frio River area (15 miles). The Frio River is well known for tubing between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. The steep grades and high elevations set this area apart as a very unique part of the Texas hill country. Vanderpool lies along Ranch Road 187 which is only a short 15 miles to the quaint town of Utopia, where you'll find a general store and bank, as well as some unique shops and eateries.
