Fredericksburg is one of the most popular destinations for a relaxing getaway in the Texas Hill Country. The city was founded in the 1800's by German immigants and the heritage lives on today. In the center of town is the Marketplatz or town square which features the Verein Kierche building. This eight-sided building is actually a replica of the town's meeting hall/church and was built in the 30's when the orginal structure was destoryed. Today it is a museum describing the history of Fredericksburg. Long before the town became well known for Fredericksburg Bed and Breakfasts, there were the sunday houses. The orignal settlers were granted a town lot and acreage for farming in the surrounding countryside. They worked the farms during the week and on Saturday they would ride to town for supplies; spending the night at their sunday house and going to church the next morning. These houses were quite small. In order to save space, there was a stairway on the outside of the house that led to the upstairs sleeping loft. You can still see them in Fredericksburg today.
