Centograph

Comfort Historic District
Founded by German “Freethinkers” in 1854, Comfort is unique. It boasts over one hundred pre-1900 buildings in its National Historic District. Many are located in the center of what is considered the most complete and authentic 19th century business district in Texas, all within an easy stroll of the Meyer Bed and Breakfast.

“Treue Der Union” Monument
Dedicated in 1866, this is the only monument to the Union cause south of the Mason Dixon line and one of only six sites in the nation which may fly the American flag at half mast in perpetuity. It marks the final resting place of men from Comfort and the surrounding area killed in the “Battle of the Nueces” in 1862. Opposed to slavery and secession, the German settlers of the area suffered greatly during the Civil War. Attempting to leave the state, the group was surprised and killed by Confederate raiders and their bodies recovered after the war ended.

Texas Hill Country Birding
Birding in the Texas Hill Country is wonderful all year long, and Comfort is located in a prime area where zones of eastern, western, and some northern and southern species overlap. The grounds of the Meyer and its 27-acre nature area itself is a superb location for bird and other wild life watching, andGolf there are dozens of species that can be seen on our grounds and along the tree-lined course of Cypress Creek in every season.

Golf
The Buckhorn golf course , located in Comfort’s north side near Interstate 10, offers 18 holes of reasonably priced championship golf.

The park is open year round. The public can view the nightly exodus of the bat colony June through October.

A classic small town parade, Comfort’s 4th of July celebration is an annual tradition marked by patriotic color and an all-day festival in the town park with food, drink, games, rides, exhibits and an evening dance. Check local information for exact times.
