Wellsboro, PA, on scenic Route 6 with gas lamps centered on the boulevard of its tree-lined Main Street and the town Green bordered by the Court House on one side and a church on the other, is a living tablaux of an earlier age. Our shops are still locally owned and managed. Dunham's Department Store is one of only two family-owned department stores in the United States. The 4th generation is active in the store management. Several other shops are 2nd generation businesses. It is not uncommon for people within a 2 or 3 hour drive to return to Wellsboro regularly for clothing and gift shopping. Visit the locally owned book store a second time and the owner may greet you with the announcement that a new book on your favorite topic has recently been released. The Endless Mountains Music Festival, premiered in 2006, brings internationally acclaimed musicians to Wellsboro for two weeks in July and August. Hamilton-Gibson Productions, our local theatre group, presents a wide variety of theatrical programs every year. A favorite is the annual 10 minute play festival. These two groups, along with the Men' Chorus, Women's Chorus, and Comminity Concert Assoc. eagerly await completion of the Deane Performing Arts Center currently under desigh. Perhaps most unique of Wellsboro's cultural offerings are the open air synphonic band concerts presented on The Green in July. Welolsboro is surrounded by mountains and forests which provide excellent hiking, biking, fishing and hunting. The Pine Creek Rail Trail at over 57 miles in length is rated by some as one of the best facililties of its type in the United States. Wellsboro is the type of community that holds many among its residents who came for a visit and returned to live here permanently.
