Lock Haven is nestled in the mountains of north-central Pennsylvania along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. It is a city with an exciting history, and the Aurora Leigh Bed & Breakfast, a Lock Haven Bed & Breakfast located on Church Street, is an integral part of that history. Founded in 1834 by Jeremiah Church, a land speculator from New York, Lock Haven was initially home to loggers, river men, traders and trappers, land speculators, and entrepreneurs. In 1849, the city became the county seat of newly formed Clinton County, and in 1859 the railroad came to Lock Haven. By the late-1800s the city was a thriving community enjoying the economic prosperity of the lumber boom and boasted dozens of Victorian-age mansions. These homes reflected a wide range of architectural styles including Gothic Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne styles. You can see many of these historic homes along Water Street, Main Street, and Church Street, an area known as the Water Street District, which was granted historic district status by the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Aurora Leigh Bed & Breakfast (302 West Church Street) is the fifth Lock Haven Bed and Breakfast to open its doors, but the first to focus on re-creating the elegance and opulence that characterized the Victorian age. Originally known as the Wilson Kistler house, it is also the oldest home to be turned into a Lock Haven Bed and Breakfast. The house was built in 1864. By 1900 the lumber boom had passed, but the Lock Haven economy continued to thrive. In 1937, William T. Piper moved to Lock Haven and established the Piper Aircraft factory, which turned out Piper aircraft until 1984. Today, Lock Haven is home to Lock Haven University, the Piper Aviation Museum, which was created in 1995, and the Mill Brook Playhouse. The community also is a gateway to the Pennsylvania WILDS, an area of scenic mountain beauty in north-central Pennsylvania with dozens of state parks, hiking trails, bike paths, and rivers and streams. The city sponsors dozens of events throughout the year, including the Summer Concert Series, the Ghost Tour of Historic Homes, Haven Holidays & Christmas Parade, and much more.
