Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the seat of Cumberland County, was settled in 1751 and incorporated in 1782. Dickinson College, a liberal arts college chartered in 1783, just a few days after the American Revolution ended with the treaty of Paris as the first college the new United States of America. Historic individuals such as Benjamin Rush, James Wilson, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Molly Pitcher, Jim Thorpe and scores of others were all part of Carlisle history. Many of its buildings date to the Revolutionary and Civil War era. Carlisle Barracks is also located here -home of the Carlisle Indian School and US Army War College.
