Williamston is a small, historic, southern, big-hearted town located in the coastal plain of North Carolina, halfway between Raleigh and the Outer Banks. It is a rural place of old families and farms, not totally unlike “Mayberry”. Six thousand folks live in Williamston and it is the county seat of Martin County. Folks will wave to strangers, go to the country store for socializing and lend a hand to anyone in need. A visit to the Williamston Bed and Breakfast Inns is the perfect way to find the best restaurants and the perfect place to find some good southern cooking. Just 10 miles away, the Cypress Grill was featured in the New York Times and NPR’s “The Splendid Table”.
Untouched by major development, the pristine lower Roanoke River and its tributaries offer excellent canoeing, kayaking, “swamp camping”, as well as fishing and hunting. Stay at either of the Williamston Bed and Breakfast Inns, canoe Gardner’s Creek and return in time to visit the Senator Bob Martin Eastern Equestrian Center, where each week horses and owners from around the country come to compete.
Each November Historic Fort Branch hosts a Civil Was Reenactment on the banks of the Roanoke. Re-enactors come from everywhere, in authentic costumes, toting muskets and bayonets and sleeping in small tents within the dirt mound fort. Those who aren’t as stoic and hardy can stay at either of the Williamston Bed and Breakfast and Inns and get a warm nights sleep. Return to the fort for the firing of the cannons or to watch the exciting battle between the North and the South.
If you want to try the small town southern way of life, book yourself a room at a Williamston Bed and Breakfast or Inn…you won’t be disappointed.
