Keene Valley, located in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks is an outdoors person’s dream location. Nestled in the heart of the Adirondack Park’s High Peaks Keene Valley is surrounded by unspoiled mountains, lakes and rivers. This is truly a hiker’s paradise with hiking trails of all type and difficulties throughout the area. The trails are well maintained and marked by the Adirondack Mountain Club and its members.
Other summer activities include swimming in the Ausable River or in one of the several lakes in the immediate area. Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are other popular water related pastimes that are enjoyed in and around Keene Valley. There is even white water rafting in the spring along with spectacular water falls fed by the spring snow melt. And the mountains afford the rock climbers spectacular views of the Adirondacks. For those less adventurous, there are numerous golf courses, some of championship caliber, that are located within short drives from Keene Valley. And the natural beauty of the area makes for wonderful settings to stop and just have a picnic by the side of the road.
The fall season offers a truly breathtaking array of color through the entire forest as the hard wood trees put on their multi colored coats of fall leaves. A hike through the woods is a “must” during this time of the year. And for those who hunt, there is everything from wild turkey to bear and deer available.
Winter bring the opportunity to once again enjoy the outdoors. Snow shoeing, ice climbing, cross country skiing and downhill skiing are all within minutes of town. The Olympic venues for the 1980 Olympics are favorites for the winter sports from Whiteface Mountain for down hillers of all ages to the Olympic cross county ski and bobsled run venue. And who could resist not visiting, and skating, where the American hockey team beat the Russian team for the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.
Located only 20 minutes from the town of Lake Placid, Keene Valley is close, but not too close, to all of the amenities associated with Lake Placid, from fine dinning to unique shopping experiences. And of course Keene Valley and the surrounding area have a number of unique restaurants and shops.
