At the edge of the Catskill Forest Preserve and only 2 1/2 hours from NYC, Fleischmanns is a tiny village of 350 on the cusp of revitalization. It's heyday was 100 years ago, when many of the fine homes were built by rich New Yorkers seeking refuge from the summer heat of the city. The village is lined with large Victorian homes recalling an era of grandness and excess. During the first half of the 20th century, Fleischmanns was a bustling summer destination. The population of this tiny village would swell to 10,000 during the height of the season. With travel trends changing and the establishment of the NYC watershed, the large and extravagent hotels fell out of favor. Fleischmanns has been through a difficult few decades. However, with the addition of a new sewer system (courtesy of NYC), new development can once again return to this sleepy hamlet. Shops long closed can finally re-open. And the town will hum with activity once again. Historically speaking, the architecture is unparalelled with the other villages along the Route 28 corridor. The village has many things to offer, including a museum (summer only), the Skene Memorial Library (recently added to the National Register of Historic Places), and outdoor heated pool, newly re-surfaced tennis courts, a lovely village park and playground, a Saturday night antiques auction, bed and breakfasts, motels, and 2 restaurants. Within a short drive are amazing hiking trails, kayaking and canoeing, horseback riding, lake swimming, tubing down the Esopus Creek, flea and farmers markets, skiing, snowboarding, and much, much more. Fleischmanns - in the heart of the Catskills!
