Cuchillo, New Mexico is Located approximately 12 Miles Northwest of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, -2 Hours South of Albuquerque, and -2 hours North of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Cuchillo was named for nearby Cuchillo Negro (Black Knife) Creek, which took its name from a local Apache chief. The town was established by ranchers and farmers in the early 1850s and peaked between 1880 and 1930. Cuchillo flourished as a trade center and stage stop, as it was between the mines at Chloride/Winston and the railroad at Engle. It began to decline as the mines closed. A few original buildings still stand, including Cuchillo Store, Hotel and Bar, which has many artifacts. Behind it are the original 2 Story Adobe stables that housed mules and horses used to haul freight between Chloride/Winston and Engle (Both are Also Considered ghost towns). Mass is still celebrated at San Jose Church, rebuilt for the third time in 1907 after being destroyed by floods. Cuchillo, once a blazing metropolis with a population of around 2000, has dwindled to ghost town of Barely 45 residents.
Truth or Consequences is quickly becoming a little artist town with 8 galleries now open and more and more artists and creative people moving to the town all the time. there are several great coffee shops, a great new york style deli, funky thrift stores, clothing boutiques, jewelry stores and book stores. There are private spas, hot springs, massage therapists and yoga classes. It has a population of around 7000 and is very funky and has a very small town atmosphere.
