Saltese, MT (population 20+ in winter and 40+ in summer) is located at I-90 Exit 10, near the
ID/MT border and along the St. Regis River. Inn the Middle of Nowhere (under development) is located south of Exit 10 within the
Lolo National Forest off of Silver
Creek Road (at the bottom) and off of State Line Road (at the top).
The Saltese area was known for gold and silver mining, and the property that Inn the Middle of Nowhere is to be built upon, is the patented St. Lawrence Lode, from the late 1800's. Saltese has
an excellent watering hole and eatery, the Old Montana Bar & Grill (right on the St. Regis River) and Mangold's Motel and Store (also on the river) with six
rooms and video rentals. A new
acreage subdivision is just north of the river, and has underground
utilities. Elk, bear, mountain lions and grouse, as well as deer and moose, are in the Saltese area. Inn the Middle of Nowhere will be the closest lodging to the
Lookout Pass Ski Area, which recently expanded, and the Trail of the Hiawatha, which is a hiking and biking trail on the bed of the old railroad of the same name. The
local snowmobile club, the Knight
Riders, maintains a trail which touches the top of the Inn the Middle of Nowhere property at its top, 6060 ft., which is close to
Dominion Peak. The $10,000 Silver
Dollar Restaurant, Gift Shop, and
Casino is located at Haugan, just
five miles east of Saltese, and is Montana's largest gift shop. They also have a motel and truck stop, and add to the appeal of Glacier
Country...this section of MT.
