Perched high above the Mississippi, from a distance, Natchez indeed appears to be suspended in time. Renowned for its meticulously preserved antebellum mansions, Natchez also is the vault for Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian and other architectural gems. The image of Natchez as a town where time stands still, attracts visitors to our Natchez Bed and Breakfast from around the globe. But upon closer inspection, for visitors to our Natchez Bed and Breakfast the city soon proves to be much more. It has a vibrant business, cultural and arts scene and contrary to perception, much as a river runs through it, so has the current of time.
Initially, the ubiquitous magnificence of the architecture is distracting. Beyond that, the people who called and call Natchez home tell the real story; tales of its early inhabitants, its mix of cultures, its various flags, its glory days and its darkest hours. Historical sites and markers throughout Natchez stand as evidence of this fusion. Through Emerald Mound and The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians we learn about early settlements. Sitting atop the bluff and built by the French circa 1716, Fort Rosalie provides commentary on the battle for control of the territory between the European empires, as it passed from French hands to British and then Spanish. It was under the Spanish that the town was first surveyed and began to flourish into the Natchez of today.
After the Spanish, Natchez became part of the United States and the first capital of the Mississippi territory. An act by the first General Assembly of the Territory incorporated Historic Jefferson College, the first educational institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Today visitors can tour a restored dorm room, dining room, kitchen and other structures. Presenting extensive southern history and slave culture, Frogmore Plantation contains 19 historical buildings and a National Register antique steam gin. The visual feast that is the Natchez in Historic Photographs museum examines the city through a different medium. Natchez Bed and Breakfast visitors who seek more variety can explore the many, sports, festivals and gastronomic delights available year round. Golf, tennis, hunting, fishing, cycling, running, hiking, can all be enjoyed in gorgeous natural settings such as St. Catherine Creek Wildlife Refuge. Specialty sporting competitions include the Phatwater Kayak races, River City Classic 10k or the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race. Festivals such as The Natchez Bluff Blues Fest, the month-long Natchez Festival of Music, or the Natchez Food and Wine Festival bring in many visitors as does the plethora of special events; theater functions, winery tours, restaurants, arts galleries and shopping in antiques row. For a touch of the mysterious the Ghost Tours and Angels on the Bluff Cemetery Tour are always a good choice. You can come for a week to our Natchez Bed and Breakfast. Or come forever. In Natchez, there is something for everyone. All of it interesting, all of it fun.
