Oscoda, Michigan is right in the middle of an expecially scenic area known as the "sunrise side" of the state. Michigan lighthouse admirers will definitely enjoy the sunrise side of the state. In nearby East Tawas, Tawas Point Lighthouse marks the northern point where Lake Huron enters the Saginaw Bay. At the tip of the peninsula is the Tawas Point State Park, with the lighthouse as its main attraction. They will also enjoy Sturgeon Point Lighthouse which is now used as a museum, decorated with items and furniture from the era the lighthouse was built. Visitors also enjoy a variety of year round watersports. The local charter captains can easily take you out for a fun filled day of fishing on Lake Huron, or on the mighty AuSable River. The AuSable River is one of the most famous rivers in the country for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Ice fishing is a very popular sport in Oscoda. In the fall and winter, Oscoda fisherman have a great time catching steelhead in the river from drift boats. From spring through fall, rent a canoe, boat, or some tubes, and spend a fantastic day on the AuSable River. Spend some time on Lake Huron's wide sugar sand beach listening to the laughter of children, and the calming sounds of the waves rolling in. At the spacious Oscoda Beach Park, kids can skateboard, play basketball, and use a variety of playground equipment. There are plenty of grills, and picnic tables for dining at the lake in this beautiful setting. Dogs are allowed if on a leash. Oscoda Michigan also offers several other pretty parks. The AuSable River Finish Line Park is downtown as well, in the shopping district, and is a wonderful place to sit and nibble on ice cream while admiring all of the different flowers in bloom during the summer. The AuSable Children's park is on Harbor Street. This new park offers great playground equipment, covered pavillions, basketball courts, and lots of room to run around in. Three Mile Park is on US-23 just north of town. Like its name, this park is also nice and wide, and features a bike path that runs parallel with Lake Huron, plus there are lots of picnic tables and grills. The nearby Huron National Forest attracts many visitors for year round bird and wildlife watching. Hikers and bikers have the use of excellent trails. Iargo Springs, is located on the River Road Scenic Byway. It is considered a holy place by native Americans. The view of the AuSable River Valley is fantastic from the 30' high observation deck. Canoer's Memorial is a great place to watch for bald eagles in the autumn. The Huron National Forest also offers 44 miles of well groomed Michigan cross-country ski trails, and snowmobile trails, attracting winter guests from all around Michigan. The AuSable River is famous as one of the country's premier canoeing rivers. The river is also the site of the Annual International Canoe Marathon, and of the 2004 U.S. Canoe Association National Canoe & Kayak Competition. You can have a prime viewing spot of the finish line right from our AuSable River vacation home. The AuSable River Queen is a one of a kind paddlewheel riverboat, offering a variety of tours. Drinks and snacks are available. Fall boat rides are incredibly popular, offering the perfect platform to view wildlife and the splendid autumn colors. Oscoda, and the nearby town of Tawas have great little shopping districts where you can wander from store to store. Whether your interests range from reading to gardening to cooking, you will have a great time strolling around these quaint specialty shops. This portion of northeastern Michigan also offers a large number of shops catering to antique lovers.
