Sharpsburg, MD, looks much as it did at the time of the Civil War. It is surrounded by the Antietam National Battle parkland and the Potomac River and has escaped most modern development. It is filled with 19th century homes and churches, a good restuarant, a good cafe, and a great ice cream shop. Across the river is Shepherd University in Sherpherdstown, WV, and down the road is Hagerstown, MD, with its outlet shopping and cultural attractions and museums.
