Millinocket, which means "many islands" in the Penobscot Indian language, was originally known as the "Magic City in the Wilderness". The town was carved out of the forest by Great Nothern Paper Co. and was a world leader in paper production until the late 1900's. The mills have fallen on hard times and are now a fraction of their former size. However, as owners of 5 Lakes Lodge, a Millinocket Bed and Breakfast,we can attest to the wonderful recreational opportunities that exist in the area. Baxter State Park, the North Maine Woods and the West Branch of the mighty Penobscot River entice many visitors to stay at 5 Lakes Lodge, a Millinocket Bed and Breakfast. Although our Lodge is considered a Millinocket Bed and Breakfast, we are actually located seven miles from town on beautiful South Twin Lake.
