Castine Maine is one of the oldest communities in North America. It has been occupied continuously sine the early 1600's as the site of numerous trading posts, forts. missions and permanent settlements of France, Holland, England and colonial America. Before 1613, and during the course of its long history. Casitne has also been home to several nations of Native Americans. What is now known as the Castine peninsula appears on a 1612 chart that geographer and explorer Smmuel de Champlain submitted to King Henry IV of France. A French trading post was established the following year in 1613 calling the penensula Pentagoet. In 1614 Captain John Smith charted this area of the coast for British interests. Settlers mamed the area Majabagaduce. Following the signing of the Treaty of Breda in 1667, which ended the war between France and England, Castine and the area was deeded to the French and a grant was obtained from the King of France to a Baron named Jean Vincent d'Abbadie de St. Castin. Eventually the area known to the French as Pentagoet would bear the Barons name and be known as Castine. Today the casual visitor to Castine is usually most impressed by the natural beauty of its harbor and coastline and by the number of 18th and 19th century Georgian and Federalist houses still in existence and in perfect repair. In 1897 a golf course was added to Castine's summer attraction and with the establishment of the Maine Maritime Academy in 1942 the town emergede as a viable modern year round community.
