Bed and Breakfast Inn Description
This historic old home, known as the "Bennett Place" was build in 1889-1890 by Mrs. Elizabeth Chenault Bennett. Building of the house was supervised by Mrs. Bennett's son, James, whose wife Sarah (Sally) was the daughter of the notorious Cassius M, Clay and Mary Jane Warfield. Mr. Clay was minister to Russia during the Lincoln administration. His family often accompanied him on his trips, and it is suspected that Sally propably contributed certain ideas for the house, reflecting her European travels. The two-and-one-half-story asymmetrical brick structue is finished by a high-hipped roof of slat6e with flared eaves and a crenelated roof comb. A two-story turret has a domed foof with flared, overhanging eaves. The double-doored centralo entrance is recessed under a single-story-arched porch of impressive size containing a terra-cotta accented balcony. Stained glass can be found in the entrance doors and in some window sashes and transoms. One Bed and Breakfast room with private bath is available on the first floor and two on the second floor. Two suites are located in the cottage behind the house that have living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bath with hot tubs.
