Volcano, Volcano Village, or Volcano Town as it is sometimes called, is located one mile from the Volcanoes National Park highway entrance. The Volcano area has many vacation rentals, Bed and Breakfasts and other places to stay specifically catering to the visitors of the National Park. The town of Volcano has two small general "quick stop" type stores and five or six restaurants including the one inside the park and one at the golf course about three miles from the Volcano town center. Visitors wishing other services including the airport must go to the next nearest town of Hilo about 26 miles away. Volcano's two small stores close around 7-8pm, and the restaurants are usually closed by 9pm. Not all of them serve breakfast. There is minimal public transportation available on the island, and no public transportation service located in the town of Volcano. It is possible to call and get a taxi from Hilo, but the normal recommendation is to rent a car to visit Volcano. There are bus tours available for the park by private companies, they usually pick up in the towns of Hilo and Kona hotels, not inside the park. Volcano town is a great place to base your vacation trip to explore the national parks trails and to visit the lava field environment. Volcano Village, Volcano’s vacation rentals , Inns, Bed and Breakfast's and the Volcano National Park’s main entrance are located 4000ft above sea level. The Volcano National Park encompasses an area from sea level to 13,000ft. Because Volcano is in a tropical rain forest, expect day temperature to be warm, with nights generally cold. A light jacket is recommended. Be prepared for rain, in the lush tropical rainforest of Volcano. At the same time, while exploring the park, expect hot temperatures on the lava fields.
