Gulfport is definitely an undiscovered gem." This Old Florida fishing village is truly unique in modern day Florida. Where can you have wide open waterfront views with over 15 dining options within walking distance? This eclectic community is home to many artists of all genres. The First Friday and Third Saturday Art Walks showcase some of that talent: not just print artists but musical and theatrical artists as well. Gulfport also boasts something most small towns don't. A Casino Ballroom which offers dancing five nights a week; a professional 180 seat theater (with two local theater groups in residence); and live musical entertainment and dancing on the beach five days a week between 1 and 3 p.m. Most importantly I characterize Gulfport as a 'community' in the true sense of the word. It is at once embracing and eclectic. Visitors to the Gulfport Bed and Breakfast often comment how they feel transported in time to a place where the pace is slower, the people friendlier and the priority is to just relax and enjoy the view. However, for as relaxing as Gulfport may be it is also a vibrant town. There is always something to do if you choose. Live music abounds in many of the local establishments; there are galleries and shops to cater to anyone's whims and festivals galore. Beach Blvd. is lined with all sorts of food and craft vendors with three stages for live music. For the outdoor adventurer Gulfport offers lots of 'green spaces.' There are numerous parks, nature trails, birding trails and we are just off the Pinellas Bike Trail. You can rent a kayak or a sailboat and enjoy the calm waters of Boca Ciega Bay. Tourists can even dock behind the Casino and explore the City. It is surprising how many locals come to an Art Walk and say "I live only miles away and I had no idea this place existed! what a great place, I can't wait to come back and explore more and stay at a Gulfport Bed and Breakfast." Gulfport's charm lies in its community. A guest at the Gulfport Bed and Breakfast this morning said it would be really interesting to do a contemporary book on Gulfport and the 'characters' that reside here. She was mentioning the three historical books that line my coffee table on the founders of Gulfport through the years. It got me thinking. There are many internationally renowned arts that live here, again, not just print artists, but musical (like John Prine) and theatrical. There are people such as myself who had distinguished careers prior to moving here and were drawn by the beauty and sense of community here. You definitely can't judge a book by it's cover here. You have no idea who you may be sitting next to and if you offered up the opportunity to chat, most wouldn't turn you down!
