Atherton has a rich history. It was almost a part of Menlo Park, the town next door, but Mr. Faxon Dean Atherton rushed to Sacramento to incorporate our town of Atherton just hours before it would have been doomed. Ours is a unique town in that it is strictly residential having no commercial businesses and store fronts allowed. One acre minimum estates with many home based businesses discreetly carried on behind gated properties, and formerly mostly summer properties for the very wealthy to retreat to during the summer months during the early 1900's, while San Francisco is engulfed in fog. Summer here is 70-80 degrees while SF can be in the 50's. A beautiful safe community of majestic trees, glorious mansions, 2 private country clubs, and borders Stanford University and the world class Stanford Shopping Center. No concrete sidewalks in Atherton, but rather a country lane approach to living, with great walking and cycling streets, quiet atmosphere and a sense of well being abounds here. A quaint library, small town post office located near the Atherton Train Station where the train stops now only on weekends between San Francisco and San Jose. Many of Silicon Valley's top executives call Atherton home. Just 35 minutes North of San Francisco, and 30 minutes drive to the Pacific Ocean and Half Moon Bay.
