Chickaloon Bed and Breakfast Inns showcase one of the most interesting and historical settings in Alaska. Situated along the Glenn Highway Scenic Byway, just 30 miles east of Palmer, Chickaloon, Alaska boasts unmatched scenic beauty in a pristine mountain environment and a small but hearty group of year-round residents. While they did not utilize the Chickaloon Bed and Breakfast Inns directory service, Nomadic Athabascan Indians traversed the Chickaloon region of hundreds of years; trapping, fishing and foraging as they transitted the area between summer and winter hunting grounds. The formal town of Chickaloon, Alaska began as a coal mining town under the direction of the US Navy in the early 1900's. Chickaloon's high quality coal had been known since the late 1800's and when the US Navy's Pacific Fleet needed fuel, they came to Chickaloon. Mining ceased in the mid-1920's, and the town was dismantled. Virtually every nail and board were removed and all that remains today of the original mining camp of 3000 people are a few coal stockpiles. Chickaloon got a new breathe of life during the construction of the Glenn Highway in the early 1940's. The US Army built the highway as a supply route during WW2 and was supported along the route by roadhouses like the King Mountain Lodge in Chickaloon. Once the highway was completed, the route quickly became a major transportation and commerce artery in Alaska, bringing people and freight through Chickaloon. Modern-day Chickaloon is home to about 300 year-round residents. Many Athabascan Indians still live in the region and have an organized village 20 miles east of Chickaloon in the town of Sutton. Most Chickaloon residents travel outside the area for work and shopping, but are willing to make the long commute in order to make this lovely place their home. Chickaloon has a Post Office, lodging which listed in the Chickaloon Bed and Breakfast Inns guide, local tourism businesses, a small store and gas station, a State campground, and the King Mountain Lodge which is still operational. Come and visit Chickaloon and you'll leave feeling like you've just stepped out of the postcard!
